Abstract

The sensitivity of the lamb wave dispersion in double layer medium changes with the surface thickness of metal plates. Accordingly, a non-destructive testing method of coating thickness is implemented by measuring the changes of specific mode wave velocity. The guided wave dispersion curve of different coating thickness in aluminium-polyurethane double layer medium is obtained by deriving dispersion equation of lamb wave in bi-layer structure. The sensitivity of the group velocity of lamb wave to the change of coating thickness is analysed, and the relationship between coating thickness and waveguide velocity was established. Finally, ultrasonic testing of polyurethane coatings with different thickness on the aluminum plate is carried out, and the thickness of the coating is calculated based on the linear relationship between the velocity of A0 mode group and the coating thickness. The error is less than 10 μm, which meets the engineering requirements.
