Abstract
This paper presents the digital image based numerical methods and their development history for mechanical analyses of geomaterials and concretes with actual meso-heterogeneity. The methods used newly developed digital image processing techniques, captured the actual meso-heterogeneity of geomaterials (soil and rocks) and concretes, then conducted quantitative assessment of the actual meso-heterogeneity, further incorporated the meso-heterogeneity into conventional numerical software, and quantitatively analyzed the responses of these materials under loading. The methods offered the innovative and quantitative approach to overcome the key assumption of homogenization utilized in conventional geomechanics. This paper also describes the research background and three main contents. They include the numerical methods for analyzing the geomechanics of actual meso-heterogeneity, the computational methods for mesh generation of actual meso-heterogeneity, and the meaningful regulations associated with the responses of geomaterials with meso-heterogeneity.
