Abstract
Here, to reasonably consider vertical seismic action and realize joint selection of horizontal and vertical ground motions, a joint selection method for horizontal and vertical ground motions based on generalized conditional intensity measure (GCIM) was proposed. Firstly, the basic theory of GCIM was expended, a construction method for GCIM distribution of horizontal and vertical ground motions was proposed, and the distribution results were compared with results of "unconditional distribution". Secondly, the basic theory of a joint selection method for horizontal and vertical seismic motions based on GCIM was proposed, and an actual calculation example with horizontal intensity measure (IM) as conditions was given. Thirdly, target distributions of horizontal and vertical seismic motion GCIM were constructed using existing horizontal-horizontal and horizontal-vertical IM correlation coefficient models. Target seismic motion databases were jointly selected, and the selection results were compared with those using traditional selection methods to illustrate the rationality of this method. The results showed that there are certain differences between constructed horizontal and vertical GCIM distributions and "unconditional" distributions; joint selection results of horizontal and vertical seismic motions match well with target theoretical distributions; compared with the seismic motion selection method only considering horizontal GCIM, the joint selection method can consider vertical seismic motion characteristics not affecting horizontal direction; the proposed joint selection method for horizontal and vertical seismic motions can more reasonably and comprehensively consider horizontal and vertical seismic motions' characteristics to provide a seismic input basis for aseismic performance study on engineering structures under horizontal and vertical seismic motions.
