Abstract

In an intersection with a median-road bus lane, there exists a multiple interweaving phenomenon due to the parallel traffic flow of buses and other vehicles that turn left, go straight, or turn right at the intersection. However, traditional signal control schemes have not been able to solve the interweaving conflicting problem caused by phase release at this intersection. To solve the problems, this study proposes a new type of intersection that utilizes the bus lane for the left turn, defines operational rules for traffic flow, and designs the phase scheme and mutual coordination timing relationship between the main signal and the pre-signal. Based on the arrival-departure diagram of the left-turning and straight-going other vehicles, and straight-going bus vehicles, a method was proposed for calculating the delay and number of stops of the vehicles in different situations, and an intersection signal timing optimization model was established to minimize the equivalent cost of the average delay and number of stops. To verify the effectiveness of the optimization control strategy, a comparison of the traditional control scheme and the optimized control scheme with specific cases was performed, and the influence of the waiting zone length on the vehicle queuing evolution process was analyzed and the applicable situation was determined. The results demonstrate that in comparison with the traditional scheme, the capacity of the optimized intersection increases, and average equivalent cost of the vehicle decreases by 32.3% under the control of the optimized scheme. The parameter sensitivity analysis demonstrates that the length of the main signal waiting zone should be set to 80 m. By sharing the median-road bus lane, the control strategy provided by this study could improve the efficiency of the intersection, minimize the impact of the bus priority strategy, completely eliminate the multiple interweaving phenomenon in the intersection with a median-road bus lane, and ensure the safety of traffic at the intersection.
